Batman Breaks $500 Million

"The Dark Knight" opens in theaters July 19

Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Dark Knight," the Christopher Nolan-helmed sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins," has earned more than 500 million dollars in the U.S., putting it less than 100 million away from beating "Titanic," which presently holds the record for highest-grossing domestic film. Additionally, the film has moved up to the third most popular movie of the Labor Day weekend after living in spot #4 for quite some time.

Despite its enduring popularity, the Batman picture is for a variety of reasons not expected to eclipse James Cameron's 1997 disaster movie, not the least of which is the upcoming holiday season, when WB will likely look to capitalize on "The Dark Knight's" success with a DVD release -- which would almost certainly see the film removed from cinemas, thus taking it out of the game with "Titanic."

Starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, "The Dark Knight" is the most popular movie of 2008 and has broken numerous records for domestic earnings and has received uniformly positive reviews from critics.
