Hot on the heels of their smash hit 30 Days of Night, writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith have partnered with Dark Horse Comics for their next offering, Criminal Macabre: A Cal McDonald Mystery.

In the tradition of classic film noir detectives, private occult investigator Cal McDonald finds himself cavorting with seedy underworld types. However most of the types he rubs elbows with happen to be vampires, werewolves, and things even weirder!

While investigating a rogue vampire that's been feeding on local college students, Cal stumbles onto something much bigger. Hot on the trail of the vamp, he comes across a shocking scene: different types of monsters mixing together at a clandestine meeting. More shocking still, he sees a human leading the unholy gathering! A few days later, a mysterious break-in at a biological laboratory only adds to what seems to be a bigger monster conspiracy. With his zombie sidekick Mo'lock-who Cal shoots three times in the first issue-the most foul-mouthed and hard-living investigator of the weird sets out to solve these mysterious goings on.

"To me, Cal McDonald is the logical progression of the hard-boiled detective," commented series writer Niles. "Instead of the 40's hard drinking tough guy, Cal is a hard, self-medicating guy with enough personal and emotional problems to fill a file cabinet. Oh, and there are monsters."

Criminal Macabre: A Cal McDonald Mystery is a five-issue miniseries. Issue #1 arrives in stores May 14 with a retail price of $2.99.
