X-MEN ORIGINS: FIRST CLASS

After Bryan Singer's surprising announcement on Wednesday night about his return to the "X-Men" franchise, the Internet has been buzzing. Fox kindly confirmed the news yesterday afternoon, as reported at Heat Vision. The Heat Vision post also mentions that "the studio has tapped Jamie Moss to write the screenplay and work with Singer on the project, which goes back to the drawing board." Josh Schwartz previously had been attached to the project as writer. Variety was able to get a few more story details from Singer. "This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there[sic] relationship took a wrong turn," says the director. "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain." I suppose I could make a "X-Men Begins" joke, but I'll refrain. At this point, there is no time table for the film's release and even Singer's presumed next film, "Jack the Giant Killer," isn't a completely sure thing.

Release date: TBA

SPIDER-MAN 4

It has been a crazy week for "Spider-Man." Between the Tobey Maguire as Bilbo Baggins rumor and then the indefinite hold rumor from Wednesday, it almost seems like someone is out to discredit the film. Sony responded to the rumor by letting IESB know the rumor is completely false and the production has a schedule break for the holidays coming up next week. I'm just going to say all this Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt must be the work of Mysterio.

Directed by Sam Raimi, release date: May 5th, 2011

RED

According to Variety, Summit Entertainment will release the film on October 22nd. The film had previously been set for a November release.

Starring Bruce Willis, release date: October 22nd, 2010

KICK-ASS

As reported here at CBR yesterday, the Hit-Girl poster has been released. Hit-Girl is played by Chloe Mortez. If you've seen "(500) Days of Summer," you know she has preternaturally mature demeanor for her age. CBR also spoke with Mark Millar about series, the movie, and the upcoming book, "Kick-Ass: Creating the Comic, Making the Movie."

Starring Nicholas Cage, release date: April 16th, 2010

SMALLVILLE

Kryptonsite has screencaps from another promo for upcoming 2010 episodes, but primarily focused on "Absolute Justice." Some of the shots feature clear images of the Sandman, JSA trophies, and Dr. Fate in action.

PREDATORS

It's been a while since we heard from "Predators." It turns out Collider and various other sites are reporting actor Lawrence Fishburne has joined the cast as "Noland." The film is currently shooting.

THE PHANTOM

Phantomsite has character breakdowns and a still gallery for the upcoming Syfy miniseries. The still gallery even comes complete with a "Slam Evil" style shot. Canadian viewers will get a chance to see the show next week as it will premiere on Movie Network on December 22nd.

Release date: 2010

WEEKEND GETAWAY

Cue that Loverboy track and get me a White Russian, it's the weekend. After a week of enough twist and turns to fill a Marvel cross-over event, I'm ready to sit down with something more sedate, like "Assassins Creed II" on the XBox 360. However, I may find myself playing a grinch at Universal Studios Hollywood's Grinchmas. Oh, I won't be in costume. I'll just be disgruntled as I'm allergic to forced joviality. Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird this weekend, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya bracing for the future threat of my heart being two-sizes too small.
