Attending a comic convention can be an exhausting proposition. Whether you’re an exhibitor, an attendee or a journalist covering panels, at the end of it all, you might feel the need to let your hair down and "rock out" a bit. For the folks present at this year’s Emerald City ComiCon, the con organizers found a perfect solution: a nerd rock concert!
Of course, this answer was easy to come by as the ECCC’s founder, Jim Demonakos, is also one half (with Kyle Stevens) of a music duo chosen to rock the final hour of the convention away – Kirby Krackle! This eclectic group of musicians began the hour playing a fun array of songs with "nerdly" themes such as an ode to the Konami video game code, a song praising the women of Marvel Comics, and a tune about the charge on Green Lantern’s power ring.
After several songs, a special guest joined the band onstage...Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada! The musical abilities of this editor/artist have occasionally been heard online before, but rarely have they been seen. Once he began playing along with the band, it became clear to all present that Quesada was the real musical deal.
An interesting side-note should be mentioned at this point though: before and after musical sets, Quesada tossed Marvel-branded guitar picks out to the crowd. One side said "Marvel" while the other side read "O.M.I.T."
Marvel’s C.B. Cebulski walked around the concert room as folks noticed these mysterious letters on their concert souvenirs. He would then ask attendees what they thought those letters stood for. "They do stand for something," he teased.
But regardless of that little mystery hanging in the air, let’s not delay the music show for you, our loyal CBR reader, any longer. Without further ado (and thanks to crack photographers Andre Tan and Michael Harring), CBR is happy to present Kirby Krackle and Jammin’ Joe Quesada! Watch as he turns his House of Ideas into a House of Rock!
