Official Press Release
Abrams ComicArts, an imprint of ABRAMS, announced today that it will publish Archie Marries . . . a special collection of the bestselling Archie mini-series that resolves the nearly seven-decade-long cliffhanger: Will Archie marry Veronica? Or will he marry Betty? The deal was brokered by Abrams executive editor Charles Kochman and Jon Goldwater, Co-CEO of Archie Comic Publications, Inc. Archie Marries . . . is slated to be released in October 2010.
In celebration of the 600th issue of Archie, “Archie Gets Married!” was released and made headlines all over the world. The eternal love triangle that has been the cornerstone of Archie comics for almost seven decades is finally untangled in this seven-part story that started with the release of “The Proposal” on August 19, 2009 and culminated in “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” an epilogue published on February 24, 2010. The storyline, written by Michael Uslan, executive producer of the Batman films, and illustrated by veteran Archie artist Stan Goldberg, begins when Archie finds himself strolling up Memory Lane and marries the wealthy and cultured Veronica Lodge. Later we find out what happens when he strolls down Memory Lane and marries the wholesome, peppy girl next door, Betty Cooper.
“The reaction to the Archie wedding story reminds us that comic book characters hold a special place in our collective memory,” said Kochman. “We follow their lives and their decisions as we do those of our friends and family. We are thrilled to have this celebrated book on our list and present this timeless story in such a special edition.”
In Archie Marries . . ., the pivotal series of seven issues will be collected in hardcover, in a double diecut slipcase, and packaged with a reprint of a classic Archie comic. The book will include all-new supplementary material created especially for this edition, including new front and back cover art by Stan Goldberg, script outtakes, never-before-seen sketches, thumbnails, annotations, vintage covers, and exclusive interviews with writer Michael Uslan, illustrator Stan Goldberg, inker Bob Smith, colorist Glenn Whitmore, letterer Jack Morelli, longtime Archie editor Victor Gorelick, and Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater.
“The Abrams ComicArts, Archie Marries… book collecting the Archie weddings story is a truly great milestone in the history of Archie comic books,” remarks Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater, “We are absolutely thrilled with the designs for the special edition and know that Archie fans the world over will be thrilled as well. The Archie weddings book from Abrams will be a prized collectable for the Archie fan in all of us.”
