This May, Dark Horse plans on impressing comic fans that it can turn out some classic superhero material alongside their lineup of creator-owned and licensed properties when the legendary Jim Shooter returns to the heroes published by Gold Key he once revitalized as part of Valiant Comics. And while readers have known that the proposed universe featuring characters like Turok and Magnus Robot Fighter would see its launch in the "Doctor Solar/Magnus FCBD 2010 Edition" on Free Comic Book Day (May 1), today the publisher announced at WonderCon in San Francisco that the ongoing "Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom" series would be drawn by FCBD penciler Denis Calero.

Below, CBR News presents an exclusive first look at Michael Komarck's cover for "Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom" #1, which ships in July, as well as the solicitation text for the first issue and a tease of Calero's art for the FCBD special.

Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1

Writer: Jim Shooter

Artist: Dennis Calero

Cover: Michael Komarck

“I am the Master of the Unified Field. The God of Energy. The living embodiment of the power of the sun. The most powerful being in the universe, unless there is a God Almighty at the end of time, when all of reality collapses into a Singularity. I am the Man of the Atom.” – from the secret journal of Doctor Philip Solar

Empowered by a thermonuclear catastrophe, Doctor Solar discovers that he can control energy. He is one with the unified field. He feels time flowing like liquid silk, tastes the light and sees the thin, bluish haze that is gravity. All are at his command. Immeasurable strength is his at a whim. Power beyond imagination courses through his body. But he knows that the same kind of science run amok that created him can also empower the wicked. In the aftershock of the cataclysm that created Doctor Solar, ripples throughout spacetime imbue one Whitmore Pickerel with the power to create life—which he uses to serve his selfish desires and reckless ambitions. His newly created being Leviathan, invulnerable and immeasurably strong, clashes with the Man of the Atom in a fierce battle that ravages the city. Meanwhile, for his personal amusement, Pickerel creates Glow, a living fantasy of unearthly charms . . . and deadly possibilities!

Dark Horse Comics proudly heralds the return of one of comics' greatest heroes, Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom! Brought to life again by superstar scribe Jim Shooter and illustrated with consummate skill by fan-favorite Dennis Calero (X-Men Noir), Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1 is but the first act in an explosive program that will also see Shooter re-imagine Magnus, Robot Fighter and Turok, Son of Stone for the 21st Century!

Special bonus for this super-sized issue: the very first Doctor Solar story from 1962!
