CAM Alternative Press Expo Party: Storytime! and Graphic Details

The Cartoon Art Museum hosts a fun-filled evening of Storytime! and Graphic Details on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 8:00-11:00pm in celebration of the 2010 Alternative Press Expo (APE). Special guests include featured artists from the Cartoon Art Museum’s Storytime! exhibition Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile!). Also appearing will be Amy Martin (The Single Girls), whose work appears in the current Small Press Spotlight. Popular syndicated cartoonist Keith Knight (The Knight Life, The K Chronicles), cartoonists Jon “Bean” Hastings (Smith Brown Jones: Alien Accountant, Haunted Mansion) and Rich Koslowski (Three Geeks, Geeksville), will also be in attendance. An updated list of party guests can be found at the Museum’s booth at the Alternative Press Expo.

Admission for the event is on a sliding scale, from $5 to $20, with guests encouraged to donate whatever they can to support the Cartoon Art Museum.

All proceeds from this reception will benefit The Cartoon Art Museum, a non-profit educational museum dedicated to the collection, preservation and display of original cartoon art in all its forms.

On display in October 2010:

Storytime! Graphic Novels for Kids of All Ages features the work of ten influential cartoonists whose work broke new ground in bookstores and libraries. Their graphic novels are promoted as product for the children and young adult marketplace but these innovative graphic novels are captivating to readers of all ages. Artists include Hope Larson, Larry Marder, Lark Pien, Dave Roman, Jeff Smith, Stan Sakai, Raina Telgemeier, Irving Tripp and Mo Willems.

Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women showcases the singular voices of female Jewish artists whose revealing diaristic and confessional work has influenced the world of comics over the last four decades. Featured artists include Vanessa Davis, Bernice Eisenstein, Sarah Glidden, Miriam Katin, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Miss Lasko-Gross, Miriam Libicki, Sarah Lightman, Sarah Lazarovic, Diane Noomin, Corinne Pearlman, Trina Robbins, Racheli Rottner, Sharon Rudahl, Laurie Sandell, Ariel Schrag, Lauren Weinstein and Ilana Zeffren.

Before Sita Sang The Blues: Spotlight on Nina Paley is the first comprehensive exhibition of award-winning cartoonist and animator Nina Paley, creator of the critically acclaimed animated feature Sita Sings The Blues. This retrospective will feature a selection of Paley’s syndicated comic strips, illustrations, and a series of prints, paintings and behind-the-scenes materials from Sita.

Small Press Spotlight on Amy Martin, a cartoonist from Chicago who now lives in San Francisco. She has been self-publishing comic books since 2004, and has completed twelve books. She is the creator of The Single Girls, Bachelor Girl, and The Girls Are Mighty Fine. Martin draws inspiration from her own life and friends, and creates witty comics that are adorable yet provocative.
