THE FLASH

Barry Allen gets his second marquis day on the Reel thanks to Moviehole. They report actor Bradley Cooper -- one of the finalists for Hal Jordan -- could end up in the boots. "Warner Bros loves them some Cooper, and DC is very keen to have Cooper be 'part of the family', so don't be surprised to hear the 'Hangover' star's name mentioned in relation to the role when the shortlist is inevitably leaked." Of course, this being a Flash story featuring Barry Allen, I think someone like Neil Patrick Harris would be perfect ... but I suppose a film version of Barry will have some of Wally West's texture grafted to him.

SPIDER-MAN (BEGINS)

Various sites, including our pals at Spinoff Online ran a press release announcing Rhys Ifans as the villain in the film. Here's the relevant part:

CULVER CITY, Calif., October 11, 2010 – Rhys Ifans will play the villain, opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, in the next installment of Spider-Man from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.

Webb added, “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

So why the secrecy around the villains? Sony didn't end up approving the Vulture, did they? The Los Angeles Times' Geoff Boucher is bettering on Kraven. "the Brian Michael Bendis version of the imperious character — as an Aussie, gun-toting version of Simon Cowell who travels to New York to hunt the hero — just feels right for a franchise reboot that wants to be very much of the moment culturally and also trying to separate itself from the super-science bad guys of the Sam Raimi trilogy which, at its heart, remained deeply devoted to the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s comics despite the CG budget." He writes. I'll make another one of my famous long-shot guess and say he's playing The Spot.

RED

While talking about the "Red" prequel comics with CBR, artist Cully Hamner has a few things to say about the film. "I've been a little more involved in terms of promotion than I have with [production]," he says. "One thing that was really cool was that when I was on set in New Orleans, there were copies of the book everywhere. They didn't just buy the book and put it in a drawer somewhere and make the movie that they wanted to make. There are a lot of tonal changes, there are obviously new characters [and] they expanded the story, but they did make this in mind with what we did and they were looking at it while they were making the movie. So that did impress me. But as far as my personal involvement, there really wasn't much. I'm trying to help promote it as much as I can because I believe in it, but I wasn't there for the making of the film." He goes on to discuss his surprise at Bruce Willis coming on board and watching the director work on set.

GHOST RIDER 2: SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE

The cast already includes Idris Elba, Ciaran Hinds and Nic Cage with his head on fire, but now word comes that Christopher Lambert (of the Clan MacLeod) is also signing up to appear in the "Crank"-tastic sequel. "He says he is in talks now to do Ghost Rider 2 with Nicholas Cage. He did sword training for 3 months," writes the proprietor of the Official "Highlander" Facebook page. The film is being directed by the boys that brought us "Crank," so this is shaping up to be one of the more interesting sequels.

CONAN

Brendon Connelly over at Bleeding Cool has a number of new photos from the film.

While I'll still have my doubts about this one until I see some footage, the still take me back to a time when there were dozens of sword 'n' sandal movies coming out. Ah, for the days when a genre flick cost $500,000 to make.

Release date: 2011

THE WALKING DEAD

As we reported yesterday, AMC has released a seventeen minute "Making of" documentary. It's a doozey, so go get a muffin or something before you watch it. Also, we're less than twenty days from the premiere.

Premieres: Halloween

SMALLVILLE

TV Guide has our first look at Erica Durance as (The Mighty) Isis in the upcoming episode of "Smallville":

Now, we've been told the character is neither the Black Marvel Family Isis nor The Mighty Isis from 70s TV, but damn if she doesn't look like both characters. According to the storyline, this Isis is the actual Egyptian goddess and is seeking to resurrect her lover Osiris. "The guys just kind of look at me now and laugh," says Durance of her character's penchant for dressing up in odd costumes.
