TOP COW PRODUCTIONS

APRIL SOLICITATIONS

When Jim McLauchlin asked me to take a look at Top Cow's catalog of characters and see if there was something in there I'd like to revamp, the first thing I did was lie.

Sure, I told him I'd be happy to take a look, but the truth is, I knew immediately I wanted to get my hands on Codename: Strykeforce. Still, I took my time pouring over the Top Cow inventory. They've got some great properties, but my opinion hadn't changed. I wanted Strykeforce.

I liked the challenge of writing a super-hero team, but with Top Cow sensibilities. My plan was to keep the core "super-powered mercenaries" concept, but update it with new characters and situations. In addition to keeping the classic super-team feel, I wanted to give it a mercenary aspect, like in the movie Proof of Life, with Russell Crowe and David Caruso as professional kidnap-and-ransom experts. I hadn't mentioned this to Jim (probably because I didn't want to admit having enjoyed a Meg Ryan movie), so I was pretty surprised when he cited it as a point of reference for the book. That was enough to tell me that we were on the same exact wavelength, and that this synergy was going to make the book soar.

As we developed the book over the course of the next few months, we adjusted the line-up here and there, substituting one character for another, until we had exactly the right combination of established and new characters. Everything was perfect-- Except the title. We needed something that reflected the book's roots, but kept it firmly in the here and now. The answer was simple.

Codename: Strykeforce is dead. Long live Strykeforce.
