According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer/director Shane Black is in "contention" to direct the third "Iron Man" film. "The writer/director has powwowed with Marvel execs about his take on the third installment in the blockbuster franchise," they write. "As of now he is being considered for the directing job, but the assumption is that if he gets the gig, he would also write a draft."

The director's chair on the "Iron Man" series has been vacant since Jon Favreau walked away from the job late last year. At the time, Favreau said via Twitter, "I've had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best." He chose to direct Disney's "Magic Kingdom" instead.

Black started his screenwriting career with "The Monster Squad" and "Lethal Weapon." His other screenwriting credits include "The Long Kiss Goodnight," a screenplay credit on "The Last Action Hero" and his directorial debut, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." That film starred Robert Downey Jr. in a well-received role.

While Black is not officially in talks to direct the film, discussion between him and Marvel at this stage revolve around a concept for the film. Before Favreau left the project, he suggested that the third film would continue story threads from "Thor" and "The Avengers." Should formal talks begin, it will mean Marvel and the director have a common vision for the project.

Should Black sign on to direct "Iron Man 3," it will not be the only comic book related film on his slate. Recently, he signed on to adapt the manga series "Death Note" for Warner Bros. As mentioned in the Hollywood Reporter article, he is also attached to Sony's "Doc Savage," based on the pulp and comic book character.
