Ending the longstanding debate over what their Spider-Man franchise reboot would be called, Sony Pictures today announced that director Marc Webb's incoming web-slinger film will be titled simply "The Amazing Spider-Man." The Andrew Garfield-starring superhero film was long rumored to be called "Ultimate Spider-Man" after the teenage Marvel comic it is drawing inspiration from, but in the end the company went with a more classic approach, borrowing the official title of Spidey's original and longest-running monthly comic series.

The official release of the title also came with a new photo credited to photographer Peter Tangen (both are reprinted below) giving fans their first official glimpse of Garfield in the full Spider-Man costume. The early release of such imagery is doubtlessly part of the studio's plan to combat the constant stream of leaked images and video from the movie's Los Angeles set.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" opens July 2, 2012 and stars Garfiled, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, Denis Leary as Captain Stacy and Rhys Ifans as one of a number of mystery villains. For more on the film, keep your eyes peeled to CBR and Spinoff Online.
