GREEN LANTERN

The Daily Blam! has a new picture it suggests might be our first look at Mogo, the planetoid Lantern:

It could also be a close up of Oa, with a crater surrounding one of the energy paths. Of course, it is always possible the beloved Lantern will show up in the film and I'll be totally impressed if he does.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, release date: June 17th, 2011

THE AVENGERS

Before The Trailer (via Screenrant) tracked down the complete information for the upcoming New Mexico casting call. The interesting part is this description of the story:

"A superhero team called 'The Avengers' do battle against two separate alien extraterrestrial humanoid life forms. The Avengers are a superhero team, consisting of a group of Marvel Comics heroes aka 'Earth’s Mightiest Heroes'. The aliens that The Avengers will fight are called 'The Kree' and 'Skrulls'. These two extraterrestrial races become embroiled in a war for ages that ultimately makes its way to Earth, and the Avengers unite to intervene with all their power and might combined."

Very interesting. Kree, Skrulls, and Loki? Can any movie contain this much stuff?

Directed by Joss Whedon & starring everybody, release date: May 4th, 2012

MEN IN BLACK III

The Hollywood Reporter delves into the film's strange shooting schedule, which began in New York last year, and the script issues that continue to plague the production. "With the first act in the can, production shut down as scheduled around Christmas, but there still was no script acceptable to all parties," they write. "The problem hadn't been resolved when the hiatus ran its course in mid-February." Screenwriter David Koepp was brought in for a rewrite with a March 28th deadline. According to the article, Koepp already turned in a draft, but the production is waiting on Wil Smith, who has script approval, to okay it.

Release date: May 25th, 2012

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

The lads at Comic Book Movie spotted a couple of X-Men talking about the film. First, Lucas Till tells About.com that the relationship between Cyclops and Havok is still ambiguous, but it shouldn't matter so much since the character appeared in other movies and cartoons. "You know, I can watch 'X-Men' all the time. I can watch those movies over and over again, I can watch the animated series, but I want to see a new film, completely new characters. You've got Beast and Mystique and they're just solid. They have to be in the storyline. But you bring in Alex Summers, you bring in Angel Salvadore - which is a brand new character I've never even heard of - you know, Banshee, those are fan favorites so it's going to be neat," he says. And speaking of Angel Salvadore, Zoe Kravitz talks about the character with The Indepedent. "My character flies and I'll be wearing a harness and I'd be wearing wires all the time. Then I'd have to stand in strange ways, pretending there are not wires and pretending that I'm flying and floating, like it's the most normal thing in the world," she says. "Also, Matthew Vaughn cares about the drama, it's not like he's trying to make things explode all the time, so you want to look the other actors in the eye and connect and connect. But it's kind of hard when all this other crazy stuff is going on." Meanwhile, The Daily Blam! has some info on an action scene in the film that is "on par with 'Inception' and 'The Dark Knight.'" I'll leave the description behind the link due to spoilers.

Release date: June 3rd, 2011

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

According to Blackfilm (via Superhero Hype), actor Derek Luke appears in the film as Howling Commando Gabe Jones. "As the first African-American to serve in an integrated unit, Jones, who was also known for carrying his trumpet into battle, is one of the close confidantes to Sergeant Nick Fury, who would later become the head of the organization S.H.I.E.L.D. Jones would later join him as an agent," they write.

Starring Chris Evans, release date: July 22nd, 2011

ROBOCOP

Deadline reports that screenwriter Josh Zetumer has been tapped to write the remake. I wish him luck. Much of the first film's success was its satirical underpinnings. The sequels took the concept more seriously and fail for the most part. If he can inject some of the original's biting edge, it could work.

Release date: TBA

SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK

Robot 6 has possible details on the revamped show, including the "the strengthening of the love story between Peter Parker and Mary Jane." Also, "Deeply Furious" -- a number centered around shopping for shoes -- may be dropped, the Green Goblin storyline may be clarified, and most shocking of all may be the complete deletion of Julie Taymor's Arachne. The character was introduced by the director and changed elements of Spider-Man's origin. I always saw it as a revision too far. Even on Broadway, you have to stick to the well-known elements of the story. Superman can't come from Altair 5 and Spider-Man can't thank a Greek demi-god for his powers.

Opens: March 15th, 2011 ... maybe

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Entertainment Weekly has a brief (and not embeddable) preview of the new Nickelodeon take on the veteran franchise.

SMALLVILLE

Here at CBR, we have a preview of the April 15th episode, "Kent."

WEEKEND TREK

Well, my inadvertent "Star Trek" week ends with this word from William Shatner on why he wants to be in J.J. Abram's second "Star Trek" feature. He tells The Ottawa Citizen that "The only reason I want to be in the film J.J. Abrams is directing is because he's shorter in stature than I am, and when I stand beside him I sort of tower. And there are very few people I can do that with. So I thought he should cast me in it just so I could tower over him." That Shatner is a funny guy. Anyway, it's the weekend and it means bad movies and trying to convince a friend of mine to watch "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya, bracing for the future threat of a "Black Hole" week.
