X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

The CBR review of the film is up. I think this paragraph says it best: "It is all the more impressive, then, that Vaughn manages to avoid falling into the same trap Singer did with his first 'X-Men' movie. As much as this is an origin story, it doesn't ever feel like one. A big part of that has to do with building the fiction on top of real world events that we know or are at least aware of. These characters are meeting for the first time, certainly, but it's in the context of something bigger." Meanwhile, MTV News arranged for the stars of the film to introduce their characters:

Lastly, James McAvoy talks sequel potential with The Los Angeles Times Hero Complex. "The next movie, if there is one, shouldn't just start off with them being pals again, but I think it also shouldn't be like the first movies only set in the 1960s," he says. "If we get another, let's not just make Magneto the bad guy; of course he's a bad-ass and of course he has a whole different ethos, but making a movie that is black-and-white is going to lose the thing that we have in this one."

Release date: June 3rd, 2011

GREEN LANTERN

Thanks to Omelete (via their US partner Collider), we have another featurette for the film:

Meanwhile, I've been told Geekweek will interview Nick Jones Jr. on Sunday. Jones is an active Marine who also happens to play a character named "John Stewart" in the film. Why does that name sound familiar?

Starring Ryan Reynolds, release date: June 17th, 2011

THE MIGHTY

As Spinoff Online reported yesterday, Paramount Pictures picked up the rights to the Peter J. Tomasi and Keith Champagne series with an eye toward a feature. The project focuses on "the relationship between the world's first and only superhero, Alpha One, and Lt. Gabriel Cole, the cop assigned by the government as his liaison. But when Alpha One reveals a terrible secret, it’s up to Cole to stop the renegade superman from destroying the Earth."

Release date: TBA

NEW KID

In a related story, Heat Vision notes that Paramount also scooped up the rights to the "Penny Arcade" strip with the intention of making an animated feature. "Book of Eli" writer Gary Whitta will adapt.

Release date: TBA

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Today's spoiler: Storyboards at Bleeding Cool that link Captain American to events in another Marvel film. Click though only if you don't mind learning more than you might want to about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Starring Chris Evans, release date: July 22nd, 2011

GHOST RIDER 2: SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE

Superhero Hype reports that the film will have a "presence" at Comic-Con International: San Diego in July, including the first look at the "evolved" character design. I wonder if Nic Cage will be there ... it could finally be my chance to interview him.

Release date: February 17th, 2012

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Yahoo! Movies has a new trailer for the film:

My, that looks ... good.

Release date: June 24th, 2011

LOCKE & KEY

Spinoff Online reports that the sets are scheduled to be dismantled at the end of the month. I guess that's all she wrote for that potential series.

Airs: TBA

WEEKEND RESPITE

Get me a White Russian and cue up a "Rocky" movie -- it's the weekend! I have plenty of family engagements and sick loved-ones to look after. I'm not sure why the late spring brings on so many illnesses, but at least there's plenty of cough medicine in reserve. Meanwhile, if any of you in the great, wide Internet discover something awesome, disheartening, or just plain weird, let us know! Take credit, come up with a clever nickname, or go anonymous. The choice is yours. Fresh rumors and movie news every weekday morning. I am Erik Amaya, bracing for the future threat of

my own sick-week.
