Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's "Justice League" continued to edge out Grant Morrison and Rags Morales' "Action Comics" #1 as DC's most anticipated relaunch title in CBR's second pollShortly after the initial announcement that DC Comics would relaunch its entire line of DC Universe superhero comics with new #1s in September -- now referred to as the "New 52" -- CBR News ran a survey polling you, our readers, on which titles you were most likely to purchase...and most likely to avoid. The results were interesting, to say the least.
The survey asked how high your interest was for each new comic series on a scale that ran from "Absolutely Purchasing" to "Not Buying At All." And while by no means was the exercise a scientific survey (as David Letterman would say, "Please, no wagering"), the responses seemed to hold true to traditional comics-buying habits of Direct Market fans: big name creators including Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Grant Morrison pulled a strong response closer to the "Absolutely Purchasing" end while titles from lesser known or newly established talents (and featuring lesser known or newly established characters) showed weaker interest.
In the interest of having a more complete picture of fan interest and public debate, CBR launched a second survey Tuesday of this week, polling readers on the exact same questions for the exact same comics. After months of interviews, previews, spoilers and reveals coming from DC, things turned out a bit differently.
While the new survey contained a smaller sample of responders (4,948 people participating versus 10,181 in the first go-round), there were significant changes in the percentages. Of the 52 titles, nearly all saw gains in the "Absolutely Purchasing" category with the only two titles that dropped definite buyers being the best-selling "Green Lantern" and "Green Lantern Corps" titles. "Justice League" from Johns and Lee remains the title with the highest number of committed readers with an additional 9% of fans signing on for a total of 66.4% of respondents clicking that category. Meanwhile, some other titles saw major gains including Morrison and Rags Morales' take on "Action Comics" which jumped over 5% in the category (for a total of 61.1%) and newfound DC superstar writer Scott Snyder's incoming series whose "Batman" and "Swamp Thing" books gained 11% (58% total) and nearly 8% (30% total) respectively.
On the other far end of the spectrum -- the "Not At All Purchasing" category -- things saw less of a shift. Many titles remained essentially flat on the level of total fan disinterest while those that "made gains" (or rather, had their percentages drop) rarely saw a change greater than 1 to 4%. A few titles saw a greater percentage of respondents click this category (also with very small shifts) including "DC Comics Presents," "Blue Beetle" and "OMAC," which this time held the distinction of having the highest rate of fans totally uninterested in buying the book.
Of course, the full story of whether or not perceptions have been changed falls somewhere in between those two extremes. In the "Very Likely," "Likely" and "Unlikely To Purchase" categories, the survey showed readers shuffling more towards the middle. While gains were made back from the "Unlikely To Purchase" category on the whole, more and more respondents in the other two categories seemed to be abandoning responses where they were leaning towards purchasing certain books in the New 52. In other words, it appears that the majority of readers have definitively made up their minds on what they'll pay for when the new books start rolling out with next week's "Justice League" #1 and beyond.
