New "Darksiders II" Video Goes "Behind the Mask"

Players take control of Death in "Darksiders II" with a range of new abilities and weapons.

This summer may be all about big-time movie releases like Marvel's "The Avengers" and "Dark Knight Rises" as well as get-togethers with your friends and relaxing -- but for THQ and the team at Vigil Studios, it's all about Death as "Darksiders II" ramps up for release this June.

In preparation for the release, the company has released a new video segment which features Creative Director/comic book artist Joe Madureira, Game Director Marvin Donald, Art Director Han Randhawa, General Manager David Adams, Lead Designer Haydn Dalton and Producer Ryan Stefanelli discussing what went into the sequel and why the focus of the game has shifted to an all-new character. The original "Darksiders" was all about taking control of War. Now, players will helm a fellow horseman: the much-feared Death.

"We chose Death to be the character in 'Darksiders II' because War really set the stage for the 'Darksiders' universe and introducing new elements," Madureira said in the behind-the-scenes video. "We felt bringing a new horseman with a totally new playstyle and different personality would be really cool. Death is probably the most well-known of the four horsemen, so we thought he should get his shot."

The video also includes new gameplay footage that gives players a better idea of how much work is going into the sequel. In addition to faster combat and traversal, players can expect larger, more detailed environments -- including angelic fortresses, demon cities, a City of the Dead and a massive temple holding deadly secrets -- new items to customize the lead character and a plethora of new weapons. Death is also bringing new combat skills to "Darksiders II," including his signature scythe -- which can be split into two separate blades that can cut enemies to ribbons -- plus axes, claws and guns.

"The main improvement from 'Darksiders I' to 'Darksiders II' is depth," said General Manager David Adams. "We wanted to make the game more involved, we wanted to make the game more involved, we wanted it to have more context, we wanted to player to really feel like they were in a real world with people living there, stuff going on."

This video comes hot on the heels of a presentation held last week in San Francisco, in which several members of the media got a first look at the game in action. "Darksiders II" arrives on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this June, with a TBA release date for PC and Wii U.
