Rocksteady Studios has already left a significant mark in the game industry with only two games: "Batman: Arkham Asylum" gained huge critical acclaim when it released in 2009 and "Batman: Arkham City" soared even further in 2011 with its huge collection of villains and expanded gaming universe. Gamers have been chomping at the bit for the development studio's next project and rumor has it Rocksteady's bringing the Heroes on a Half Shell back to gaming consoles.
A website called the Paul Gale Network has reported an unconfirmed rumor that the team is hard at work on a new game project called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Crisis." According to PGN's report, the game is rumored to feature all four legendary Turtle characters -- Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, respectively -- as they use their weapons and other tools like shurikens, smoke bombs and grappling hooks to take on Shredder and his cohorts.
The game is rumored to include a number of classic enemies from the comic books and animated series including arch-nemesis Shredder, the thugs Bebop and Rocksteady, the crazed scientist-turned-fly Dr. Baxter Stockman and the alien brain Krang. Vehicles may also make an appearance in the game, including the Turtle Van and the Turtle Blimp.
While PGN did not reveal many details about the unconfirmed game's plot, it will most likely involve flashbacks featuring Splinter, the human sensei turned rat who helps guide the Turtles in their battle against evil. Although the rumor states Rocksteady may be approaching this game with the same sort of dark tone in "Arkham Asylum" and "Arkham City," it would also feature some humorous moments -- particularly when the Turtles deal with side characters such as reporter April O’Neil and vigilante Casey Jones.
Unfortunately, there are many reasons this rumor could be false -- PGN does not have a source tied directly to the project to confirm and Rocksteady Studios did not respond when the website reached out. However, the timing of a new game would be impeccable, between an upcoming CGI animated series from Nickelodeon debuting later this year and a forthcoming live-action movie produced by Michael Bay in the works for 2012/2013.
If Rocksteady can pull off the same magic with the Turtles it did with Batman, we’d definitely say "Cowabunga!"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Manhattan Crisis" is reportedly in development for Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
