Today, DC Comics revealed a first look at Chris Burnham's cover for "Batman, Incorporated" #1 written by Grant Morrison via its blog, The Source. The series is one of six books slated for release in May as part of the "Second Wave" of the New 52. In late January, the publisher pulled back the curtain on Burnham's interior pages for the book, but this is the first time readers have caught a glimpse of the cover.
In 2011, Chris Burnham spoke with CBR News about Morrison's "Batman, Incorporated: Leviathan Strikes," mentioning the post-"Flashpoint" universe wouldn't affect the story in a huge way. "Well, for the second volume of 'Incorporated' there are little changes like Catwoman not knowing who Batman is anymore or Batgirl being able to walk or Commissioner Gordon having red hair now. But all that stuff doesn't really matter in terms of the 'Batman Vs. Leviathan' storyline," Burnham told CBR News. "I've read the story notes and the first couple of scripts, and it's a brand new Batman adventure with new villains and new characters. And the stuff that's coming back from the first volume is the core Batman members versus the forces of Leviathan. I think it's hopefully going to dodge the question of the weird continuity problems. Hopefully we'll be able to dodge that entirely. [Laugher] So when Grant's full Batman run is completely done, you'll be able to read it all from start to finish and the 'Flashpoint' thing won't even register. That's my hope."
After the announcement of the "Second Wave" in January, Batman group editor Mike Marts mentioned "Batman, Incorporated" will incorporate details from Morrison's pre-New 52 content as well as introduce elements for new readers. "You know, my belief is, readers who pick up the new series will be able to move into it and won't feel weighed down by past continuity," Marts said in January. "It will be a good chance to pick up a new book and to read new continuity. And people who have been reading everything over the past few years will also be satisfied and see that elements of what Grant had set up previously will be incorporated, so to speak, into the new title."
Burnham's cover is the latest in DC's reveals today, which included the announcement of Scott Lobdell, Tom DeFalco and Brett Booth's "Teen Titans Annual" #1 and Jeff Lemire and Timothy Green II's "Animal Man Annual" #1, coinciding with the release of the "Second Wave" in May.
