Official Press Release
To a generation he was the Boy Wonder. And although it has been nearly 45 years since he donned tights as Robin from the Batman television show, Burt Ward has never been too far away from the role that defined him. Now, Ward returns to "hero" status in a new kid-friendly comic book mini-series from Bluewater Productions that showcases his superhero legacy and his post-acting career passion; pet rescue. This book will be a spin-off from the hit series "Mis-Adventures of Adam West."
"Burt Ward, Boy Wonder," premiering first as a free issue during Free Comic Book Day this May then as a full 4-issue mini-series this summer, is a campy take on Ward's fictional post-"Batman" life. The premise follows Ward as he returns to super-hero status, this time with his own sidekicks, his dogs Gentle and Giant as they travel though time fighting villains and shady ne'er-do-wells. "I about excited about working with Bluewater Productions to create a comic book based upon my crime-fighting adventures as Robin, the Boy Wonder," Ward said. "I am even more excited about incorporating my Superhero adventures with my amazing rescued Gentle Giant and Little Giant canine kids who are also dedicated to fighting heinous villains."
Written by Emmy-nominated filmmaker and humor writer Darren Garnick, "Burt Ward, Boy Wonder" looks to capture the carefree spirit of the old Saturday morning cartoons as well as the kitschy humor of the 1960s Batman series in which Ward co-starred.
"There's certainly room under the Comics Big Tent for everyone, but I see no need for infusing depressing, angst-filled themes into superhero stories -- which seems to be the case with many contemporary incarnations of the characters. I embrace the BAM! and POW! of a good old fashioned choreographed fist fight over a terrorist car bomb." Garnick said.
The Ward comic book is not Bluewater's first foray into the world of the 1960s Caped Crusader. Bluewater publishes a-series featuring Adam ("Batman") West and more recently a mini-series featuring West and Ward's most lethal nemesis, Julie ("Catwoman") Newmar.
According to Bluewater, the West serial, "The Misadventures of Adam West," did so well as a mini-series and graphic novel, that the title will become a monthly book. The 1st issue came out in stores last week.
"The Secret Lives of Julie Newmar," a title that promises rogue scientists, Abraham Lincoln, space aliens, Jim Morrison! And last but not least...the purrrfect Julie Newmar debuts in May.
"Call it one part nostalgia, one part great storytelling and all parts camp, these three titles are a joy to produce," said Darren Davis, Bluewater Productions president. "What we lost with the cancellation of Cartoon Network's "The Brave and the Bold" series we get back with Adam, Julie and Burt; books that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults.
A percentage of the proceeds of "Burt Ward, Boy Wonder," Ward's "pet" charity: Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoptions. It is the largest giant breed dog rescue in the United States, with multiple facilities and many foster homes.
