If record-breaking openings in overseas markets and predictions of "Hunger Games"-like numbers for its North American premiere weren't enough to assure fans that "The Avengers" is destined to be a Galactus-sized blockbuster, then maybe this will: With barely a week until its U.S. debut, Deadline reports the Joss Whedon-directed action film has pre-sold more tickets than all the previous Marvel releases combined.

That information comes courtesy of advance sales site MovieTickets.com, which states that it "is pre-selling more tickets for the upcoming release than the online ticketing company sold for 'Captain America,' 'Thor,' 'Iron Man 2' and 'Iron Man' combined at the same point in the sales cycle for each film. In fact, pre-sales are over 1 1/2-times that of these past Marvel films combined sales at the same point in the sales cycle."

According to the website, "The Avengers" is selling 3,995 percent more tickets than 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger," 1,034 percent more than 2011's "Thor," 114 percent more than 2010's "Iron Man 2," and 1,406 percent more than 2008's "Iron Man." It's unclear why 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" isn't part of the tally; it's the least successful of the Marvel Studios films, so its conclusion might not make much difference anyway.

In addition to those eye-popping figures, MovieTickets.com reports that 56 percent of "The Avengers" pre-sales are for 3D.

Opening May 4 in North America, "The Avengers" stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Selvig.
