Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic's QR Voice Variant cover for "Harbinger" #1

Valiant Entertainment's "Summer of Valiant" launched with the release of Robert Venditti and Cary Nord's "X-O Manowar" #1, followed less than a week later by the publisher's Free Comic Book Day #0 offering.

As part of the promotion for "X-O," the first issue offered a unique variant cover -- one that talks to the reader by way of smartphone and QR-code technology. The promotion proved to be a big success for the newly reborn publisher, so it should come as no surprise that it will be utilizing it once more on its next big release -- Joshua Dysart and Khari Evans' "Harbinger."

"I think [the original] 'Harbinger' was successful because it did things that Marvel and DC at the time weren't doing," Valiant CCO Dinesh Shamdasani told fans at this year's C2E2 show. "You had a great, rounded, realistic set of characters, facing troubles that were very modern in its time. You had a lot of scenes that were in hotel rooms and vans; you didn't have fights on moon bases. It's going to do things that you are not seeing from other publishers."

Today, CBR debuts the message "Harbinger" antagonist Toyo Harada has for the title's hero, Peter Stanchek, along with an exclusive first look at artist Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic's variant cover that will interact with your smartphone.

Check out our preview of "Harbinger" #1 and stay tuned to CBR for more on "Harbinger," "X-O Manowar" and the rest of the Summer of Valiant.

Official Press Release

Valiant is proud to debut the Harbinger #1 QR Voice Variant – the next in Valiant's line of ground-breaking, QR code-augmented variant covers in stores this Wednesday! Illustrated by Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic, scripted by Joshua Dysart and animated by Neal Adams’s Continuity Studios, the Harbinger #1 QR Voice Variant is the Valiant Universe's first introduction to Toyo Harada – figurehead of the Harbinger Foundation and would-be mentor to the one psionic with the power to oppose him, Peter Stanchek.

Written by New York Times bestselling author Joshua Dysart with art by Harvey Award nominee Khari Evans, Harbinger #1 finds Pete out of work, on the skids, and coming to grips with the fact that he may be a psionic-powered “harbinger” with the potential to reshape the course of human history. Harada is a wealthy business magnate, a respected philanthropist and the most powerful harbinger of all – or so he thought. As they forge an uneasy alliance, will Harada offer Pete a chance for redemption – or attempt to induct him into a secret network of conspiracy, subversion and control? Pete is about to discover that he’s not alone in the world and, soon, the generation who has nothing will take on the man who has everything.

In addition to the QR Voice Variant, also Harbinger #1 boasts three other stunning covers – the standard edition by rising star Arturo Lozzi, the Pullbox Exclusive Variant for comic shop subscribers by Mico Suayan, and an incentive variant by Doug Braithwaite. This Wednesday, the next epic installment of the Summer of Valiant begins when Pete and Harada usher in a whole new generation of hero, only in Harbinger #1 – on sale now!
