New "Injustice: Gods Among Us" Images, Gameplay Video & Details

Harley Quinn is one of the DC Comics characters headlining "Injustice: Gods Among Us"

At the end of May, WB Games announced "Injustice: Gods Among Us," a new collaboration between DC Entertainment and "Mortal Kombat" studio NetherRealm -- and with the Electronic Entertainment Expo taking place this week, it's no surprise that more information has come to light since the surprise announcement. New images for "Injustice" have been unveiled via the game's Facebook page and DC Comics' blog featuring revealed characters Batman, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Solomon Grundy and Harley Quinn, all sporting what appears to be New 52-inspired character designs.

The images aren't the only new information coming out of E3 2012. G4 interviewed "Mortal Kombat" creator and NetherRealm Studios head Ed Boon, showcasing some of the gameplay fans can expect to see from the upcoming brawler. The footage includes closer looks at each of the characters in action with expected moves such as Wonder Woman's lasso and sword strikes; Superman's flight and heat vision; and The Flash's speedy punches. However, there are also a few surprises with Harley Quinn sporting a hammer, gun and an exploding pie; Batman immobilizing The Flash upside-down with his grapple gun and using him as a punching bag; and Solomon Grundy grabbing Wonder Woman by the head and tossing her far away from the battlefield.

"Our goal is to make the most insane, over-the-top, blockbuster superhero experience packaged in a fighting game," Boon told G4. "We wanted to make our backgrounds interactable and destructible. We wanted players to be able to go to a certain part of a background and pick up a car and throw it. So all these events that you see, smaller events of a fighting game, magnify it by ten and that's what "Injustice" is."

Boon also noted there will be a story to explain how and why the DC Universe seems to be at odds with each other -- a story that will presumably be written by revealed game scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. As for playable characters, the roster will be "comparable to what 'Mortal Kombat' was, in the twenties." The "Mortal Kombat" creator further stated that number would expand after the game's launch thanks to downloadable content.

One of the major complaints of the most recent fighting game to feature the DCU, "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe," was the lack of brutal Fatality finishing moves on the part of DC's characters, something that Boon addressed about "Injustice: Gods Among Us."

"I think our studio is so associated with 'Mortal Kombat,' and we're very proud of that, but this is truly a different game," he said. "This game has its own identity. People keep asking us, 'Are there going to be X-rated moves in the game?' and there's not going to be X-rated moves, but we are going to be able to knock someone into outer space. We're definitely going to be doing that equivalent feature but within the realm of this game. It's not 'Mortal Kombat,' but we think people are going to love it anyway."

"Injustice: Gods Among Us" hits stores in 2013.
