written & illustrated by HOWARD CHAYKIN

cover by HOWARD CHAYKIN

CONCEPT

In 2031, chaos was the new world order: Worldwide nuclear and chemical conflict, environmental disasters, and nationalism had driven the United States government - and the corporations that owned it - to the relative safety of the planet Mars, and the government and corporations, now renamed the PLEX, ran things in absentia from the red planet. The only real law on Earth was enforced by the PLEXUS RANGERS.

REUBEN FLAGG had been the star of a television series dramatizing the fictional adventures of one such Plexus Ranger. When Flagg was replaced by a hologram, he was drafted into the Plexus Rangers, and assigned to protect the city of Chicago.

In partnership with RAUL, the smartest talking cat alive, and LUTHER IRONHEART, the stupidest robot ever, and surrounded by a horde of the most beautiful women of the 21st century, Flagg faced an uphill battle protecting and defending the American way of life - or rather, what's left of it.

This is AMERICAN FLAGG! - created, written, and illustrated by HOWARD CHAYKIN - and winner of numerous awards and honors, including nine Eagle Awards!

The first trade paperback collects issues 1 through 6 ("Hard Times" and "Southern Comfort"). The second features issues 7 through 12 ("State of the Union" and "Solidarity -- For Now"). The first volume also reprints the nine-page prelude written and illustrated by CHAYKIN that was never printed in the original comic!

"American Flagg!," the American Flagg! logo, and the American Flagg! character likenesses are trademarks of Howard Chaykin, Inc.

And, like gunslingers of lore, their reputations precede them as they have to prove themselves over and over again, while becoming involved in a feud between two local power brokers and the seedy underworld of boxing. A groundbreaking and compelling epic!

TOP COW

INTRO

Take the case of a friend of mine who's doing twenty-five to life in Federal Prison for allegedly contract killing some dude. I say he was railroaded. So what if he was seen in the area? So what if twelve hundred unaccounted for dollars mysteriously appeared in his bank account? There was no murder weapon. There was no bloody shirt. The jury just got all weepy on account of the dead guy being a father of four. They woulda convicted a ham sandwich.

And what if he did do it? Does that make him a bad guy? He's gotta eat just like you. He's got bills just like you. Look at Jackie Estacado. Yeah, he's a killer and a gangster, but he suffers, too. The Darkness denies him almost every pleasure in his life. He could release that power upon the world-Let the Darkness free and wash himself in sex and power and more sex. But despite his suffering he contains it. And why? Because he's a good guy, that's why. Maybe he's a hero just because he hasn't let hoards of demons free to ravage the earth. Maybe we ought to thank him for that!

So, with thoughts of my wrongfully convicted friend in my head and his framed mug shot staring at me from the edge of my desk, I wrote this tale-four issues of The Darkness, starting with this month's #17. To show the other side of life, maybe change some preconceived prejudices…and prove that hit-men are people too.
