While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is grounded in major cinematic releases like "The Avengers," "Iron Man," "Thor" and "Captain America," the building of the mythology extends far beyond the full-length features. Marvel One-Shots, the shorts included with the home video releases of Marvel Studios films, bring more detail and depth to the MCU and give fans a better look at the world beyond these larger-than-life heroes. It started with "The Consultant," which bridged the gap between "Iron Man 2" and the post-credits scene for "The Incredible Hulk, and was followed by "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Thor's Hammer," showcasing the fighting abilities of Agent Coulson and linking together "Iron Man 2" and "Thor." Now, Entertainment Weekly has revealed "Item 47," the newest Marvel One-Shot to be included with "The Avengers" home video release on September 25.

"Item 47" stars Lizzy Caplan ("Party Down") and Jesse Bradford ("Flags of Our Fathers") as Claire and Benny, a down-on-their-luck couple who come across one of the Chitauri weapons from the final New York showdown in "The Avengers" and "proceed to make some incredibly bad decisions."

"The world is topsy-turvy now. There’s been an alien invasion, and things are crazy," Marvel Studios co-president and "Item 47" director Louis D’Esposito told EW. "So when this gun literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We’re going to rob a few banks, we’re going to buy a boat, we’re going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved."

"Item 47" refers to the Chitauri gun, which two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are tasked to retrieve from Benny and Claire. Maximiliano Hernández, who previously appeared as an agent in "The Consultant," "Thor" and "The Avengers," is joined by Titus Welliver ("Lost"), who makes his Marvel debut. Unlike Marvel's previous One-Shots, which clocked in at about four minutes apiece, "Item 47" will be a good 12 minutes long -- and as expected, EW further reports that the studio hopes to have a short for every home video release for Marvel feature films including "Iron Man 3," "Thor 2" and "Captain America 2."

Although "Item 47" will officially debut on September 25 for the home video release of "The Avengers," attendees of Comic-Con International at San Diego 2012 have a chance to see the entire short by participating in a real-life scavenger hunt during the convention. "The Avengers Second Screen" app, available on iTunes this Friday, will contain the first clue to a trail through San Diego that ends with a special screening of the full short on the evening of July 12.
