Although Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" had tough competition this weekend with the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics on Friday, but it still managed to break $537.2 million in worldwide box office gross, with a total domestic gross of $289 million to date. According to Deadline, the film dropped 60% domestically from its first weekend for a $64 million dollar box office gross, but despite the drop is still the third highest 10-day domestic take behind "The Dark Knight" and "The Avengers." Analysts estimate it will also be the third fastest film of all time to break $300 million domestic.
Despite the 60% drop in box office gross domestically, "The Dark Knight Rises" still took the weekend at #1, jumping 42% from Friday (when the London Olympics opening ceremonies aired) to Saturday -- and it's likely going to break a few more records before its time in theaters concludes. Although the 2012 Olympics definitely played a factor in the film's less-than-stellar Friday performance, it seems the Aurora, Colorado shooting is still influencing some moviegoers' desire to see the film in theaters. Recent NRG research showed 20%-25% of domestic moviegoers are still hesitant to see the conclusion to Nolan's "Batman" trilogy due to the tragic shooting during a midnight release of the film in Aurora, Colorado.
