UPDATE: Variety reports Whedon's involvement was announced by Disney head Bob Iger during an earnings call with analysts today. Iger further noted the writer/director will also develop a Marvel-themed television series for ABC. Unsurprising, especially considering Whedon's fan-favorite work in the television sphere including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly" and more.

Writer/Director Joss Whedon has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter to return as writer and director for Marvel Studios' upcoming "Avengers" sequel.

Since its release earlier this year, "The Avengers" has broken a number of box office records including biggest opening weekend ($207 million) and currently sits at the #3 highest grossing film of all time -- both domestic and worldwide -- behind fellow box office blockbusters "Avatar" and "Titanic." Unsurprisingly, the Joss Whedon-helmed film is also the highest grossing film of 2012. The DVD/Blu-ray release is slated for September 25 later this year.

More details as they develop.
