"Avengers Vs. X-Men" continued its strong market performance with #9 and #10It was a close race in August between Marvel and DC Comics as the two top publishers battled in a close race for dominance in August. Marvel's "Avengers Vs. X-Men" #9 and #10 led the top ten for the month, with the 50th Anniversary issue "Amazing Spider-Man" #692 and "AVX: VS" #5 also in the top ten. DC took the majority share of the slots with "Batman" #12 and "Justice League" #12 leading the charge at the third and fourth ranks, respectively, while "Before Watchmen: Rorschach" #1 and "Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan" #1 also both made the top ten.
Although DC nabbed 33.32% dollar share to Marvel's 32.42%, the House of Ideas edged out DC in unit share by .06%. In the battle between the independents, Image Comics' normal dominance in the market was beaten by IDW Publishing's 5.88% dollar share.
However, Image's "The Walking Dead" continues to perform strongly in trade sales, with the first two volumes nabbing the #2 and #9 spots, respectively. DC led the charge this month with "Batman: Earth One," with New 52 graphic novels accounting for three of the top five graphic novels of August. Oni Press' color edition of "Scott Pilgrim" Volume One also had a strong debut at #7 and Marvel brought up the rear with "Fear Itself" at #10.
Diamond's comparative sales statistics revealed a rise in both dollars and units across the board. Sales were up 11.23% from July and 17.80% compared to August 2011. Year-to-date, sales of comics and graphic novels through Diamond are 18.41% higher than 2011 year-to-date.
