Robert Kirkman can't help but tell anyone who will listen: he's excited about killing his own characters.
As part of the upcoming "Invincible" #100 from Image Comics/Skybound, the writer isn't only teasing the death of "Everyone" as the three-part arc which culminates in the anniversary issue says. He celebrating their end with a specail Death-centric cover by one of comics best-known illustrators.
"Art Adams is an industry giant I've been a fan of for as long as I can remember," Kirkman told CBR News while sharing an exclusive first look at Adams "Invinvible" #100 piece. " One of the great joys of reaching a benchmark like this on Invincible is having a valid excuse to get your idols to participate in the fun. Having Art work on an Invincible cover really is a high-water mark for this now decade-old series. I couldn't be more thrilled."
The release came a day after CBR's interview with the writer on the milestone issue landed where Kirkman explained, "I think any time you reach any kind of milestone, you have to give some kind of resolution. In a long-running series, I think it's important to not give too much of a resolution because you don't want to give the readers a sense of, "Oh, that's a perfect ending, I'm checking out now." At the same time, you have to be setting up new stories with new beginnings. That's pretty much what this storyline is about; it's closing a chapter on Mark Grayson's life and possibly opening another one. Assuming he survives."
Kicking off in December's issue #98, "The Death of Everyone" follows a newly re-powered Mark Grayson working along with Zandale Randolph -- the hero known as Bulletproof who took over for Grayson as Invincible and still sports the identity -- and a group of other heroes trying to save the world from Dinosaurus. The type of villain who claims to have the greater good of humanity in mind, Dinosaurus posits that the only way to save the world is by destroying a large portion of its population.
"Invincible" #99 and #100 by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley are set for release from Image Comics and Skybound on Jan. 2 and Jan. 23, respectively.
