This weekend, Superman flexed his muscles to take the No. 1 spot at the North American box office and the No. 1 June opening of all time.

Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's "Man of Steel" brought in $125.1 million since Thursday night, according to The Hollywood Reporter. From Friday to Sunday, the film brought in an estimated $113.1 million, enough to top the $110.3 million made by 2010's "Toy Story 3" to become the top opening weekend of all time for June.

Part of that amount was $13.3 million from IMAX theaters, where it also became the biggest June IMAX opening of all time. And it easily beat 2006's "Superman Returns," which brought in $84.2 million in its first five days ("Superman Returns" opened on a Wednesday).

Father's Day weekend grosses were up 51 percent over last year, with "Man of Steel" capturing 60 percent of the market. "Man of Steel," which cost about $225 million to produce and another $150 million or more to market and release, stars Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Antje Traue as Faora and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White.

Coming in second at the box office this weekend was the R-rated comedy "This Is the End" by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The film has made $32.8 million since it opened on Wednesday. The magician heist film "Now You See Me" placed third in its third weekend with $10.3 million, for a domestic total of $80 million. "Fast & Furious 6," meanwhile, hit $636.9 million in global grosses, beating the $628 million earned by the fifth installment of the franchise. It placed No. 4 in its fourth weekend with an estimated $9.4 million, with its North American total reaching $219.6 million. "The Purge" came in fifth with $8.2 million.
