Official Press Release

There has been much speculation as to what is going to happen with the Ignatz Awards this year due to the cancellation of The EXPO 2001. Will they be awarded online? Hosted at another comics convention?

The answer to both of these is no. After much deliberation, The EXPO steering committee has decided that the best course is to not seek outside venues for the Ignatzes. The Ignatz is a festival prize determined by a ballot of attendees and exhibitors, and, as such, the results of the voting are unique to the environment found at The EXPO. To hold the Ignatzes without a way to ensure similar results would not be fair to the recipients nor in keeping with the spirit of the award, the committee has decided.

EXPO organizers are currently seeking a method to recognize the nominees for the 2001 Ignatz Awards. Meanwhile, we thank our Ignatz jurors and everyone who submitted their books for the 2001 Ignatzes. For a complete list of this year's nominees and jurors, go to www.spxpo.com/ignatzwinner01.htm

The EXPO, North America's premier showcase for alternative and small-press cartoonists and publishers, was scheduled this year for Sept. 14-15 in Bethesda, Md., but was cancelled due to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Next year's festival is scheduled for Sept. 20-22, and registration forms will be available shortly. For more information, go to www.spxpo.com.

In the meantime, EXPO 2001: The Comic, a 368-page comics anthology featuring work from more than 50 cartoonists-including a short story by Art Spiegelman and a cover by Daniel Clowes-is now available at comic-book shops worldwide. All proceeds from the book go toward the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit organization that fights censorship and defends the First Amendment rights of comic-book creators, retailers, and publishers in the United States.
