Marvel Comics has announced "Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign," a new mobile game for iOS and Android releasing October 3. Revealed by Ryan Penagos on Twitter, the game seems to take its name from the 2009 Marvel Comics event following "Secret Invasion" where the villains were in charge of the Marvel Universe.
"Puzzle Quest" released in 2007 combining the popularity of match-3 games like "Bejeweled" with RPG elements. Each battle was represented by a game of match-3 with abilities that allowed players to manipulate the board in unique ways. Players could also equip armor, weapons and more in the first game, with other options added to the sequels: "Puzzle Quest: Galactrix" (a space-themed version) and "Puzzle Quest 2." "Marvel Puzzle Quest" is the first new incarnation of the game since "Puzzle Quest 2" in 2010.
Although it's great to see Marvel expanding its presence on mobile platforms, the publisher has yet to release its "Battle of the Atom" mobile game announced in July, with a story intended to act as "a time-traveling narrative tie-in." A release date was never announced for "Battle of the Atom," but with the event getting into the second half of its story, fans are likely wondering when the game will see a release date.
"Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign" hits iOS and Android on October 3.
