Following weeks of rumors, The Wrap reported Wednesday night that Paul Rudd is in "early talks" for the title role in Marvel Studios' 2015 "Ant-Man" film.

While noting that Marvel had no comment on the casting, industry outlets appear confident: Variety's headline reads "Paul Rudd to Star in Marvel’s 'Ant-Man,'" and The Wrap states Rudd has "landed" the part.

Rudd was named in October as one of two frontrunners for the role, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This week's news that Gordon-Levitt is producing a film adaptation of DC Comics' "The Sandman" -- as well as potentially starring and directing -- may have taken him out of contention for the part.

If a deal is secured, it would be something of a departure for Rudd, known for comedies like the freshly released "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Still, Rudd seems to fit the style of the movie's director, Edgar Wright, who's known for blending action and comedy in his past films like "Shaun of the Dead" and 2010 comic book adaptation "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

"Ant-Man," co-written by Wright and Joe Cornish, has a scheduled release date of July 13, 2015. This would be the first known casting for the film, though Rashida Jones -- who starred with Rudd in "I Love You Man" and "Our Idiot Brother" -- has been rumored to be up for the role of Ant-Man's frequent romantic and superheroic partner, The Wasp. "Ant-Man" has been in development with Wright since 2006.
