Marvel has confirmed Paul Rudd will star in the title role of 2015's "Ant-Man," via a post Thursday evening on Marvel.com. This comes one day after reports Rudd had been offered the role, and was in "early talks" for a deal.

“When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a statement. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we'd found the right guy. We couldn't be more excited for our audiences to see what he's going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."

Notably, Marvel's release doesn't specify which Ant-Man Rudd will be playing, as both Hank Pym (the first, and an original member of the Avengers) and Scott Lang have previously been mentioned in connection with the film.

This is the first announced casting for the film, though Rashida Jones has been rumored to potentially be in contention for the role of The Wasp, Hank Pym's traditional superheroic and romantic partner. "Ant-Man" has been in development, with "Shaun of the Dead" director Wright at the helm, since 2006.

Primarily known as a comedic actor since his role in 1995's Clueless, Rudd has starred in films including "Knocked Up," "I Love You Man" and the freshly released "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." He was named in October as one of two frontrunners for the role, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who earlier this week confirmed he's producing a film adaptation of seminal DC Comics series "The Sandman" -- as well as potentially starring and directing -- which may have taken him out of contention for the part.

Co-written by Wright and Joe Cornish, "Ant-Man" is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2015.
