"Trees" #2 cover, shared by Warren Ellis on his "Orbital Operations" mailing list.

Following a report Tuesday on Bleeding Cool, Warren Ellis has confirmed via his email newsletter that he's working on an Image Comics series with artist Jason Howard titled "Trees," set to debut in May.

In the newsletter, Ellis shared the solicitation to "Trees" #1: "Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive. Beginning a new science fiction graphic novel by Warren Ellis & Jason Howard."

Ellis and Howard previously worked together on the digital comic "Scatterlands." On Ellis' official site, he wrote that they're hoping to have six issues finished by the time #1 is released by the end of May, and that the series could be a long-term project for both creators.

"'Trees' is open-ended -- at this stage, we think the first tranche of story will run about eight issues," Ellis wrote to fans. "Those eight issues tell a complete story -- several, actually -- but they open up the world to the extent that we could continue to tell 'Trees' stories for a good few years. And if the book doesn’t crater on impact, and if Jason doesn’t kill me for the hyper-detailed full-page panels I'm making him draw right now, then we hope to."

Word of "Trees" first surfaced via an image from a retailer sent to Bleeding Cool of the series on the cover of this month's "Previews." "Trees" was not included in Image's May 2014 solicitations, released last week, despite being scheduled for release that month. Ellis, whose second novel "Gun Machine" was published last year, is also writing the upcoming "Moon Knight" for Marvel, scheduled to premiere in March.
