Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" officially kicked off the summer movie season in North America this weekend by webbing up an estimated $92 million at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It's difficult to compare the sequel's opening to its predecessor, which opened on the Tuesday before the Fourth of July in 2012 and made $137 million in its first six days. However, it's about $3 million short of the opening take for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which opened a month ago. It's also less than the opening weekend takes of "Spider-Man 3" ($151 million in May 2007) and "Spider-Man" ($114 million in May 2002), but more than "Spider-Man 2," which brought in $88 million in its opening weekend June 30-July 2, 2004.

"Amazing Spider-Man 2" continued to dominate the international box office in its third week abroad with an additional $116 million, including an estimated $10.4 million from China, where it opened earlier today. So far the film has made $277 million overseas for an estimated worldwide total of $369 million. Its predecessor made $752.2 million globally in 2012.

"The Winter Soldier", meanwhile, brought in an estimated $7.8 million domestically, where it has earned $237 million thus far. It came in fourth at the box office behind "The Other Woman" and "Heaven is for Real." Worldwide "The Winter Soldier" has made $679.8 million worldwide since it opened.
