Fox has released the first "Gotham" teaser trailer at Entertainment Weekly, with the 45-second clip highlighting early interactions between Gordon (Ben McKenzie and young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) -- plus quick looks at the show's early incarnations of Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), Catwoman (Camren Bicondova), The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) and Poison Ivy (actor as-yet undisclosed).

"However dark and scary the world might be right now," Gordon tells Bruce. "There will be light."

"Gotham" has been picked up by Fox for its 2014-2015 season.

Originally published May 5, 2014, 3:09 p.m. PDT: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has picked up Batman prequel series "Gotham" for its 2014-2015 season. While it's great news for DC fans, the pickup shouldn't come as much of a surprise -- when "Gotham" was announced in 2013, it came with a series commitment from Fox -- meaning that the network would pay a big penalty if the series didn't get picked up.

"Gotham" joins other Fox freshman dramas "Backstrom" (created by "Bones'" Hart Hanson) and Egypt drama "Hieroglyph," as well as returning hourlong series "The Following," "Glee" and critical darling "Sleepy Hollow." The series is one of many current DC Comics-based properties in development including both "The Flash," "iZombie" and "Hourman" at the CW; "Constantine" at NBC; and "Preacher" at AMC. The recent announcement of the "Justice League" movie also revealed other properties under development, including "Shazam," "Metal Men," 100 Bullets" and "Fables."

With a pilot by "The Mentalist" creator Bruno Heller, "Gotham" stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle and David Mazouz as a young Bruce Wayne.
