Archie will relaunch its Red Circle superhero imprint as Dark Circle Comics in 2015.

USA Today reports that Archie Comics' Red Circle Comics superhero line will be relaunched in 2015 as Dark Circle Comic under the watch of editor and Archie senior vice president of marketing Alex Segura.

"Dark Circle has an entire library of heroes, villains, worlds and teams that has been basically untapped," Segura told USA Today. "We're bringing together a group of great writers, artists and more to jump in without many rules. We're handing them the keys and telling them to go crazy."

Segura further noted the success of Mark Waid and Dean Haspiel's "The Fox" miniseries as an indication that audiences desire new takes on characters that require little knowledge of them before jumping in.

"There's an audience for creator-driven superhero stories that don't require you to read 10 other titles or a decade's worth of continuity just to get a sense of what's going on," he said. "We're not looking to be the 53rd book in (DC's) 'The New 52' or the 12th X-Men book. Those guys do those books well. We're taking our inspiration from cable networks like HBO, AMC and FX -- great, diverse programming featuring some iconic characters that have yet to see their most definitive stories told. That's what we want to do now."

Archie relaunched the Red Circle Comics characters in 2011 with the "New Crusaders" digital series by Ian Flynn and Ben Bates as a part of Archie and iVerse Media's partnership. Waid and Haspiel's "The Fox" launched in 2013 with backup stories featuring The Shield by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Cavallaro. While the USA Today piece gave no indication of any creative teams or characters for the Dark Circle Comics launch in 2015, it's likely more information will come to light in the coming months.

The Dark Circle Comics rebranding comes amidst a time of unique projects for Archie Comics, including the continuation of "Afterlife with Archie" and a new, darker "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch" series set to launch in October.
