UPDATE 8/12/2014 11:00 AM PT: The Variety article sourced in this article is a report from June 2014. Neither Warner Bros. nor Zack Snyder have confirmed Jason Momoa as part of the cast. The original article has been amended to accurately reflect the timing of the report.

Jason Momoa has joined "Batman V Superman" as Aquaman.

Variety reported in June 2014 that "Game of Thrones" actor Jason Momoa has been cast as Aquaman in Zack Snyder's upcoming "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." He has long been rumored to be in talks to play the character.

Momoa is best known for his role as Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," as well as his work in the starring role of 2011's "Conan the Barbarian." He was also one of the main contenders for the role of Drax in "Guardians of the Galaxy," a role that eventually went to Dave Bautista. Rumors of Momoa's involvement in "Batman V Superman" began in December 2013, when it was first reported he was in talks to join the film's cast.

While there has been no confirmation that Aquaman would appear in the upcoming film, Zack Snyder recently called in to a Detroit radio show to defend Aquaman after the character came under fire by two morning show hosts.

"The cool thing is that with Aquaman, his trident -- people don't realize this -- that could actually cut the flesh of Superman, if they came in contact,” Snyder said during the radio show. "That's a thing that's in the canon. And he's super-strong, because of course, he can exist at these super-deep depths, so when he comes up here it's like he's crazy strong. … Not to say he's in my movie, or anything like that, he's just pretty badass -- he has the potential to be badass. That's all I'm saying."

Opening March 25, 2016, "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and more.
