Some of geekdom's favorite characters scored all-new collectible reveals this week. DC Collectibles and Diamond Select Toys both unveiled their fall-shipping figures and statues -- which include new Batman and Captain America pieces respectively -- while Spider-Man, Boba Fett, Batman '66 and "The Book of Life" star Manolo earned their own announcements. Even Nintendo video game star Kirby got in on the action!
DC COLLECTIBLES | In the latest batch of DC solicits, the DC Collectibles folks were all about the Bat. The 75 year-old crime-fighter and his cohorts look spry thanks to a 9.5-inch tall Gentle Giant statue based on "Batman: Arkham Knight" as well as the Batman, Harley Quinn, Arkham Knight and Scarecrow figures from that same game. But, a pair of other heroes got in on the action with the DC Comics Icons Green Arrow statue based on the character's New 52 appearance and the Moebius Superman: The Man of Steel entry. All of these pieces will ship in March.
MINIMATES | Diamond Select Toys also revealed quite a few new products in the latest issue of "Previews." The world of MiniMates will expand with the first Buck Rogers box set that includes Buck, Col. Wilma Deering, Princess Ardala, Tigerman and a smaller Twiki. The second Godzilla set is also in the works and consists of Hedorah the Smog Monster, Mechagodzilla, Jet Jaguar and Atomic Godzilla. Finally, a Kill Bill box set called Masters of Death will showcase Beatrix Kiddo, Bill, Hattori Hanzo and Pai Mei.
THE WALKING DEAD | Lots of people are gnawing at the bit to see the fifth season of AMC's "The Walking Dead," which debuts on October 12. Before that, though, Funko has their own fifth in the works, in this case the fifth series of Pop Vinyls based on the show. The September-shipping wave includes Prison Glenn, Carol, Hershel, Tyreese, Teddy Bear Girl and Well Walker which actually splits apart in the middle!
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 | Diamond Select Toys reminded Spidey fans that they have a trio of "Amazing Spider-Man 2" Gentle Giant statues in the works that hit in September. In addition to the 7-inch tall crouching Spider-Man statue, DSTP will also ship a pair of busts of the Wall Crawler as played by Andrew Garfield in the film and Dane DeHaan's Green Goblin.
BATMAN '66 | Tweeterhead and Sideshow Collectibles teamed up to create yet another show-accurate version of Adam West's Batman. The foot-tall maquette diorama called "To The Batmobile!" faithfully recreates the original costume and even comes with a base that includes half of the Bat Computer. The second half will be featured in the companion Burt Ward Robin piece.
CAPTAIN AMERICA | DST and EMCE Toys continue to faithfully recreate the classic MEGO Marvel figures of the '70s with their Marvel Retro line. They recently showed off the next installment, Captain America. The package includes the basic figure which can be dressed to look like World War II soldier Steve Rogers, MEGO Cap or a more comic-accurate version. This Cap also comes with two different shields and heads and arrives in March.
STAR WARS | Now here's a monument we wouldn't mind driving all day in a crowded bus in eighth grade to see! Gentle Giant just unveiled their Boba Fett Life-Size Vintage figure based on the character's old school Kenner action figure. This new version stands a whopping six feet tall and will ship hallway through next year, possibly in Carbonite.
KIRBY | Kirby's coming out of the dreamland swinging! The little pink hero of a variety of Nintendo games makes his First 4 Figures debut with a statue called Sword Kirby. He swings that sword with all his might, standing 16-inches tall. The exclusive version features light-up LEDs to bring the sword-swooping motion to life. Both hit early next year.
BOOK OF LIFE | Jorge R. Gutierrez and Guillermo del Toro's "The Book of Life" looks pretty stellar at this point. Audiences will find out just how good it is (or isn't) when the movie hits on October 17, but Funko will give collectors a chance to get a better look at the characters thanks to two different sets of toys. The Legacy line of film-accurate toys will hit in October and includes hero Manolo, his lady love Maria and villain Xibalba. Meanwhile, the September-launching Pop Vinyls consists of Manolo in two versions, Maria, Xibalba and La Muerte.
