"Popeye" will return to theaters in 2016, and on Thursday Sony Pictures Animation released a look at the new animated film, introduced by director Genndy Tartakovsky, well known to animation fans as the creator of "Samurai Jack" and "Dexter's Laboratory."

Here's the clip -- following behind-the-scenes footage of Tartakovsky discussing the process of adapting "Popeye" and what the character means to him, a roughly 80-second animation test starts near the two-minute mark:

And here's just the test footage:

Created by E.C. Segar, "Popeye" debuted as a newspaper comic strip in 1929. The character has a long history in both comics and animation, and in 1980 the late Robin Williams starred in a "Popeye" live-action film, directed by Robert Altman.

Tartakovsky's "Popeye," first announced in 2012, doesn't have a firm release date, but is expected in 2016. After a storied career in TV animation, Tartakovsky made his feature film directing debut in 2012 with "Hotel Transylvania," also for Sony Pictures Animation. A sequel, again directed by Tartakovsky, is slated for release on September 25, 2015.
