Though the first issue isn't due out for another month, Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen's forthcoming "Descender" comic book series from Image Comics has touched down at Sony Pictures Entertainment after a competitive bid for its film rights.

Lemire and Nguyen, both of whom are no strangers to the New York Times bestseller list, were announced as executive producers alongside producer Josh Bratman in a press release sent out by Sony earlier this afternoon. Lemire is best known for his work on comics like "Sweet Tooth," "Trillium" and "Animal Man." Nguyen's past credits include "American Vampire, "Batman Eternal" and "Batman Li'l Gotham"

"Descender" follows TIM-21, an incredibly lifelike artificial boy whose machine DNA may very well hold the key to the origin of the robots that have decimated entire planets. Because of this, he is the most wanted robot in a universe that has outlawed androids. Nonetheless, TIM-21 and his ragtag group of friends jump from one exotic planet to the next as they search for his home in this sprawling cosmic opera.

"It was a competitive situation for Descender, and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series," Lemire and Nguyen said in the press release announcing the news. "We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential."

Published by Image Comics, "Descender" #1 is scheduled for release on March 4.
