Official Press Release

[Pounded]Oni Press is pleased to announce the April debut of POUNDED, a three-issue, monthly miniseries from acclaimed writer Brian Wood (COUSCOUS EXPRESS, CHANNEL ZERO) and fan favorite artist Steve Rolston (QUEEN & COUNTRY). While the blending of comics with music has become an Oni staple, POUNDED takes a new approach that is sure to knock comic and music fans alike off their feet. This all-new tale of broken hearts and busted heads follows hardcore punk wannabe and art school dropout Heavy Parker as he's forced to confront Missy, his pissed off ex, and the stone cold reality she brings with her. In conjunction with the series Springman Records is releasing a soundtrack featuring some of the biggest names in punk rock.

"Steve had worked with us before, doing cover art for our PUNK ROCK STRIKE CDs," explained Springman Records head Avi Ehrlich. "So when Brian and Steve started working on a punk rock comic, I knew we had to do a tie-in. We're finalizing agreements with bands every bit as loud and as mean as characters Brian and Steve have created in POUNDED. Sure, the comic and the CD can be enjoyed on their own, but together they form a 1-2 punch right to the gut!"

Set in Rolston's home town of Vancouver, POUNDED is a world filled with trust-fund babies and armchair revolutionaries, punks too soft to be hardcore and too old to be living the lives they live. Heavy rules this scene as a benevolent dictator. He sings lead in a local hardcore band. He puts out zines and pseudo-revolutionary material, and flypost propaganda about town. It's good to be king. Or at least it is until Missy, Heavy's ex-girlfriend, returns to town with a bunch of hardcore New York City punks in tow, bent on teaching Heavy a lesson.

"POUNDED is as much about the clashing of two scenes as it is two people," series editor James Lucas Jones commented. "The difference is really a matter of scale. On the surface the two cultures share a lot of same music and supposed ideals, but while Heavy is used to goofing off on the playground, Missy has moved up to the big leagues."

"Springman is putting together a great disc," concluded Rolston. "Brian is writing a great script. Put the two with my art and you have a package that's like a savage beating. You never know where the next hit is going to come from and no matter how hard you try, you just can't get away from it."

POUNDED #1 (of 3) will feature 32 pages of black-and-white story and art, with a full color cover. With a cover price of $2.95, it will ship to comic book stores on April 3, 2002. POUNDED: THE OFFICIAL COMIC SOUNDTRACK features exclusive POUNDED artwork. A detailed listing of bands and tracks is scheduled to be announced shortly. It arrives in stores April 17, 2002 with a retail price of $7.95.
