Official Press Release
Oni Press is pleased to announce the addition of COURTNEY CRUMRIN & THE NIGHT THINGS, an all-new comic written and drawn by GLOOMCOOKIE co-creator Ted Naifeh, to its 2002 line up. Starting out with a four-issue miniseries this May, the series follows a young girl named Courtney Crumrin as she discovers a mysterious and sinister world of wizards and witches; dark magic and secrets; strange creatures and night things.
"COURTNEY isn't the type of book people expect from us," commented Oni Press publisher Joe Nozemack, "But while it shares some characteristics with the other 'goth' comics out there, Ted brings something to these characters and these stories that is completely unique. COURTNEY is no more a typical 'goth girl' comic than THE COFFIN was a typical superhero tale."
Everything was great for Courtney. She had friends scattered through her city neighborhood. She liked her school and teachers and classes. But that was before. Now Courtney's parents have dragged her out to a high-to-do suburb to live with her creepy Great Uncle Aloysius in his spooky old house. And while her parents have slipped easily into their new social status, Courtney is still getting accustomed to her new snobby classmates and the strange shadowy visitors that often come to visit her uncle.
"On the surface Courtney seems like your average, innocent, little girl," added Naifeh. "But beneath her cute exterior lies a grim, sullen, grouchy, and withdrawn person. She's more like her creepy, old uncle than anyone realizes."
"I really see a variety of people relating to Courtney," Nozemack concluded. "Ted's work on this book captures the same feel novelists like J. K. Rowling and Lewis Carroll are known for. It's exciting to be adding yet another facet to Oni's already diverse line."
COURTNEY CRUMRIN #1 is scheduled to arrive in comic shops from Oni Press in May of 2001. The monthly comic will be in a standard, black-and-white format.
