Official Press Release

New York: In a room packed with illustration notables, three giants of the sequential and fantasy art fields were officially inducted into the Society of Illustrators. All on the same night, Neal Adams, Michael Golden and Basil Gogos took the august stage to accept their honors.

All three stalwarts are also connected as they are the subjects of books from leading illustration and cartooning publishers, Vanguard Productions, making February 1, 2007 truly a Vanguard night. Past president of the Dallas Society of Illustrators and Vanguard publisher, J. David Spurlock said, "Artistic community is culturally very important, it is an honor to be associated with these fine talents."

The qualities and realism that made Adams a legend on Batman comics and Tarzan book covers is revealed in Adams' many Vanguard projects including the insightful NEAL ADAMS SKETCHBOOK; the luxurious NEAL ADAMS MONSTERS graphic novel, and the fully painted 2007 ART OF NEAL ADAMS calendar.

Critically acclaimed by The Village Voice, Time Out New York, Starlog, Fangoria and cited as Art Book of The Year by Rue Morgue magazine, FAMOUS MONSTER MOVIE ART OF BASIL GOGOS explores the career and iconic images created by Gogos of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, Rob Zombie and more.

Co-creator of the X-men character, Rogue, Bucky O'Hare, and Spartan X, Golden is known for his fine, detailed work. Vanguard's upcoming Excess: The Art of Michael Golden will chronicle the career and techniques of this influential storyteller. The book marks an important comics milestone and features an introduction by Spawn creator and Spider-Man artist-writer, Todd McFarlane.

The Society of Illustrators is one of the most respected organizations for artists in the world. Members have included Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Frederic Remington, James Montgomery Flagg and Bob Peak.

Now, with the 106th anniversary of SI falling on the very night that Adams, Golden and Gogos join the ranks, SI continues to utilize exhibitions, public works and scholarship funds to promote fine illustration art.

As Mark Twain said at that first SI dinner some time ago, "Illusions are the only things that are†valuable to us. God help the man who reaches the stage where he only faces reality."
