Official Press Release

STAGGER LEE, the historical graphic novel by Derek McCulloch and

Shepherd Hendrix, has swept up six nominations in the second annual

Glyph Comics Awards, honoring the best in black comics and creators.

Telling the history and lore of Stagger Lee, both the man and the

songs he inspired, McCulloch and Hendrix's graphic novel has earned

nominations in the categories of Story of the Year, Best Writer, Best

Artist, Best Male Character, Best Female Character, and Best Cover.

STAGGER LEE has earned raves from publications including

Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and The

Miami Herald, while the authors' American tour has attracted hundreds

of enthusiastic readers in St. Louis, San Francisco, and Berkeley,

with upcoming stops in Washington, D.C. and New York.

"We're thrilled to have been nominated," McCulloch said. "Stagger

Lee is a huge figure in African-American folklore, and to have our

interpretation so enthusiastically embraced by the black comics

community is a deeply meaningful honor."

Hendrix adds, "In the many years we've known each other, Derek and I

have been meaning to collaborate on a worthy project such as STAGGER

LEE. It's exciting to receive such eager professional and fan

recognition."

Deftly mixing the historical narrative of Lee Shelton with musicology

interludes describing the evolution of the song he inspired, STAGGER

LEE weaves together an intricate fictional narrative and a rare

social perspective on nineteenth history culture, language, politics,

American folklore, and race.

The Glyph Awards will be awarded at the East Coast Black Age of

Comics Convention in Philadelphia, PA, May 18 and 19.

Stagger Lee is 232 pages with a $17.99 cover price. It is available

for reorder through Diamond (MAR061829).
