Official Press Release

New York, NY - Jim Hanley's Universe, a New York City based comic store, is pleased to announce its participation in the Sixth Annual Free Comic Book Day, taking place on Saturday, May 5th, the day after the Sony/Columbia release of Spider-Man 3.

As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores.

Jim Hanley's Universe will kick off the festivities a day early with noted fantasy illustrator, Charles Vess. Vess will be promoting the new printing of Stardust, his collaboration with best selling author, Neil Gaiman, which is soon to be a major motion picture. Vess will be appearing from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 4th.

Jim Hanley's Universe will also be extending their store hours on May 4th as they host a special midnight signing with famed comic book author, Robert Kirkman. Kirkman, known for his humorous and engaging stories, is the writer behind such popular comics as The Walking Dead and Marvel Zombies. Kirkman will be promoting his new creator owned comic, The Astounding Wolf-Man, on a national tour that begins in New York City at Jim Hanley's Universe on Friday night and ends Sunday in Berkeley, CA.

NOTE: Kirkman will be appearing on Friday, May 4th from 11:00 PM until 1:00 AM. Hanley's will only be giving out free copies of The Astounding Wolf-Man from 12:01 to 1:00 AM. To further celebrate this event, the store will be having a 20% Off Everything in the Universe sale from 12:01 AM to 1:00 AM.

On Saturday, May 5th, Hanley's will continue with more creator appearances, hosting Dan Slott (FCBD: Amazing Spider-Man: Swing Shift/Marvel Comics), Fred Van Lente (FCBD: Marvel Adventures Three-in-One/Marvel Comics), Joe Staton (FCBD: Digital Webbing Jam/Digital Webbing) and Eric Wight (FCBD: Justice League of America/DC Comics). The creator appearances will begin at 12:00 PM and go on until 9:00 PM.

Writer Dan Slott is known for injecting humor into typically serious superhero books, as seen in his past work on The Thing, Batman Adventures, and monthly in She-Hulk. Slott's latest book, Avengers: The Initiative, takes a look at the post-Civil War Marvel Universe and has debuted to rave reviews. Amazing Spider-Man: Swing Shift is sure to appeal to fans of the new movie and longtime fans as well. Dan will be our guest of honor, appearing from 12:00 PM until, as he puts it, "everyone gets a copy of Swing Shift!"

Fred Van Lente is another writer that is known for his sense of humor, due to his wildly successful comic, Action Philosophers. Recently, Van Lente has been writing for Marvel Comics' All Ages Line (Marvel Adventures) and his Marvel Adventures Three-in-One will contain 3 stories starring Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and the Fantastic Four! Fred will be appearing from 12:00 to 2:00 PM.

Joe Staton is a comic veteran that truly needs no introduction. At one point or another, Staton has drawn every character in the DC Universe, from Superman to the Metal Men. He is best known to young readers as the artist of Scooby-Doo. Staton will be appearing to promote his own character, E-Man, and the Digital Webbing Jam. Joe will be appearing from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Eric Wight is a professional artist, illustrator and animator. Wight is the author of the manga My Dead Girlfriend (Tokyo Pop) and adapted The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay into comic book form for Dark Horse Comics. He won the 2004 Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award and is known to TV viewers as the "hands" of character Seth Cohen from the Fox show, The OC. Eric will be appearing from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
