INTRO

MEATBALLS (the movie, not the meat) was my first impression of slumber camp. Pranks. Campfires. Swimming. And, of course, hot dog eating contests. When my parents said I was going to camp for the summer, I was thrilled. Then…I saw FRIDAY THE 13th.

Okay. I'm ten. At the bus leaving for camp, I keep telling myself camp is going to be like Meatballs, but really, all I could muster was visions of Jason Voorhies. That music echoing in my ears-WHEE! WHEE! WHEE! WHEE! (Or something like that.)

As a child, summer is all at once amazing and terrifying. We have the freedom to really discover who we are, but are afraid about what we might find.

This book is a prequel to a movie-that hasn't even been released. Next year Sony Pictures Entertainment is going to release a new movie, THE COVENANT. The Covenant is a group of four teens whose families belong to a long line of Warlocks. Imagine the fun and threats of a teenager with nigh-unlimited power. This prequel finds this Covenant in a time before they really learned to use their powers. And what better place to set this story than Summer Camp?

Tone Rodriguez and Miguel Montenegro's art conveys the joys and fears of being a kid in every single panel, while the coloring captures the warmth of summer. Rodolfo Migliari's painted cover takes us back to the classic horror posters that filled us with dread. Me, I got to relive my favorite summer-without the hot dog eating contest. Now you get to enjoy the awkwardness, the fun…and the frights. I know you will.

Corpse Bride
McFarlane Toys

Corpse Bride carries on the dark, romantic tradition of Tim Burton's classic films. Set in a 19th century European village, this stop-motion animated film follows the story of Victor, a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride, while his real bride, Victoria, waits bereft in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world -- or the next -- that can keep him away from his one true love. McFarlane Toys is creating a wide variety of toys to accompany the film.
