Art of ComicBooks | 8-Week Class - The medium of Comic Books / Graphic Novels is one of the most elastic, wide-ranging and expressive forms of art and entertainment, potent in addressing any aspect of human experience. This course joins lecture, discussion, demonstration and in-class individual guidance to explore the unique characteristics of the medium and help students use them to best advantage in their own work. Topics emphasize principles of visual storytelling (Layout), including drawing styles and their effect on subject matter and meaning; comunication without words; the co-dependence of word and picture and how comic books are produced, including pencilling, inking, lettering, and coloring. We reflect on the history of the medium as well as the business of the industry, including breaking in, submitting samples, and working with editors and agents. Students have the option of working from their own story or professional scripts provided by the instructor, towards creating pages of portfolio-quality Comic Book art.
