Comic Books, Film
Start Time: 07:00PM End Time: 09:00PM
Panelists DAVID GERROLD (The Trouble With Tribbles) JOSEPH PHILLIP ILLIDGE (Milestone Media), PAUL KUPPERBERG (Archie’s Kevin), JEFF TREXLER (The Beat), DANNY FINGEROTH (The Stan Lee Universe) ADAM DEKRAKER (The Young Protectors) discuss issues surrounding the hiring of ORSON SCOTT CARD, an anti-gay activist, to write a Superman story.
In one corner, Superman: Last Son of Krypton, who has powers and abilities far greater than those of mortal men, and who who fights for truth, justice and the American Way.
In the other corner, Orson Scott Card, NY times bestselling author of ENDER'S GAME (soon to be a major motion picture) and many other novels, who has equated homosexuality with pedophilia and strongly opposes same-sex marriage.
In a follow-up to last month's month's SURELY YOU'RE JOKING, DR. WERTHAM (http://comicsbeat.com/on-the-scene-sparks-fly-at-surely-youre-joking-dr-wertham-event/), The SOHO GALLERY FOR DIGITAL ARTS COMIC BOOK ROUND TABLE series presents THE MAN OF STEEL VS.ORSON SCOTT CARD: a discussion by a distinguish panel of how the comic book field has continued to attract controversy and how it copes with the on-again/off-again scrutiny of the mainstream media and it's perception by American Culture as a medium for kids.
When DC Comics hired Card to write for its upcoming Adventures of Superman web-comic series, gay rights supporters and their allies rose up, as did civil libertarians who oppose blacklisting creators who hold a currently unpopular opinion. Petitions are circulating calling on DC Comics to rescind its hiring of Card, and threatening boycotts. While everyone on our panel supports gay rights and same-sex marriage, not everyone believes publishers should black-list people who hold opposing viewpoints - and if you think you know who takes which position, you're probably wrong.
