The True Goal of DC Comics' "Convergence" Has Been Revealed
Start Time: 06:00PM End Time: 09:00PM
The students of the School of Visual Arts’ Illustration & Cartooning Department will be hosting Fresh Meat, a public comics art festival in Manhattan. Fresh Meat has been the annual highlight of SVA’s cartoonists and illustrators for over a decade, giving students an opportunity to exhibit their self-published comics and illustrations.
Fresh Meat began in 2001 as the SVA Comics Festival, organized by then ambitious student body president and now New York Times bestselling cartoonist Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama). This first event featured such exhibitors as Dash Shaw (BodyWorld) and Tintin Pantoja (Who is AC?), and has since hosted other notable alumni such as Jess Fink (Chester 5000, We Can Fix It!), Liz Baillie (Freewheel), David McGuire (Gastrophobia), Edwin Huang (Skullkickers), Allison Strejlau (Regular Show), Laura Knetzger (Bug Boys), and Gus Storms. Fresh Meat continues to be the premier event to meet the rising talent in the next generation of cartoonists.
Notable exhibitors from this year’s festival include Coffee Spoons members Kate Drwecka and Li-Or Zaltzman, Molly Ostertag, artist of the webcomic Strong Female Protagonist, and Ben Urkowitz, the cartoonist behind Real Rap from Oily Comics.
For the first time, Fresh Meat will be hosted in SVA’s Westside Gallery (133/141 West 21st Street), with doors opening from 6 PM to 9 PM. Refreshments will be provided and attendance is free.
