All-Day Event!

OUR MISSION — Denver Comic Con promotes education and community, educating children and the general public through pop culture, comics and bringing together the diverse people and interests of our community regardless of age, race, gender or background. By focusing on education and providing guests, programming and events that encourage diversity, we strive to promote tolerance and empower the members of our community.

The story, so far…

A few years ago, while talking about comic books, a group of friends agreed Denver needed a big fan event, one as great as conventions in other parts of the nation, one with comic creators, celebrities, gaming and all the other attractions of a modern comic con. They also decided they wanted the event to contribute to the community by helping kids fall in love with learning the way they had: through comics. Yes, this con was going to different!

First they gathered accomplished educators to help create Comic Book Classroom. Between 2010 and 2012, the foundations of Denver Comic Con and CBC were laid down simultaneously, with the former bringing on experienced organizers from other local events and the latter debuting the first version of its “Storytelling Through Comics” curriculum to local area schools. With the help of some dedicated volunteers and generous donations, Denver Comic Con became a reality on Father’s Day weekend, June 15, 2012, the result of which was unexpected and overwhelming success.

The inaugural convention featured a number of comics guests including Barry Kitson, Jason Aaron, Georges Jeanty, Ethan Nicolle, Rebekah Isaacs, Zach Howard, Noah VanSciver, Neal Adams, Peter Gross, Mike Grell, Allen Bellman, Amy Reeder, Katie Cook, and Jeremy Whitley to name but a few.

Celebrity guests included James Marsters, Chandler Riggs, Billy West, Kristen Bauer, Michael Uslan, Jasika Nicole, Aaron Douglas, Colin Ferguson, and more.

This year also witnessed the launching of the “Fantastic Pour,” the first official Denver Comic Con beer and the first time a local brewery (Breckenridge Brewery) joined forces with a comic con to make such a product; the first annual Costume Shindig; and of course a huge exhibition and sales area which included a unique, family friendly area called the Comic Book Classroom Kids’ Corral.

Finally, DCC debuted a companion event called The Rocky Mountain Conference on Comics and Graphic Novels. Affectionately referred to as ROMOCOCO, this literary conference is dedicated to exploring and furthering the most innovative and cutting edge comics’ scholarship and pedagogy. The inaugural meeting featured Scott McCloud as keynote speaker, as well as well-renowned scholars and artists from across the country.

The 2013 convention more than doubled the 2012 crowd of 27,000 at just over 61,000 total attendance. Comics guests included J. Scott Campbell, Jim Steranko, George Perez, Fiona Staples, Katie Cook, Andy Price, Tony Fleecs, Moritat, Zombie King Arthur Sudyam, Ramona Fradon, Jeffrey Brown, Peter Bagge, Mike Baron, Andy Runton, Dan Parent, Matt Wagner, Mike Raicht, and Steve T. Seagle, to name a few.

Celebrity guests included Guest of Honor William Shatner, George Takei, Saul Rubinek, Eddie McClintock, Colin Baker, Wil Wheaton, Felicia Day, Raphael Sbarge, Nelsan Ellis, and Peter Mayhew. ROMOCOCO’s keynote speaker was Chis Ware.

“The Caped Brewsader” was the winner of the Breckenridge Brewery “Name the Beer” contest and became a sensation as the only beer in recent history made with the Buddha’s Hand fruit.

Among many wonderful moments, the convention included William Shatner’s reading of the children’s classic Where the Wild Things Are and Peter Mayhew presenting original works in the CBC Kids’ Corral. DCC introduced the Reel Heroes Film Festival into its programming as well.

And the adventure continues…
